Trees require certain essential elements to function and grow. Called nutrients, these elemenents are metabolized by the tree and necessary for it to complete its life cycle. Fertilizing a tree can increase growth and can, under certain circumstances, help reverse declining health. However, if the fertilizer is not needed or applied incorrectly, it may be of no benefit or it may increase susceptibility to certain pests and accelerate decline.
